Do Appliances Have Enthusiasts?

Is there a group of people that know the maximum rotational speed of a 1980s Swiss washing machine? Are there people that cant understand how consumers would just walk into a store and buy a brand new microwave without researching the competition first? How about purchasing a new sofa without caring about the fact that it depreciates by over 70% just leaving the store?

Are there groups of people that get into bar fights over the build quality of Dyson v. Hoover vacuums? Did the vacuum enthusiasts freak out about autonomous vacuum robots? Are they worried that the connection between man and machine around the household track will die away?

Are cars really so special?

“Are there groups of people that get into bar fights over the build quality of Dyson v. Hoover vacuums?”

So I lived in Andrews TX for a while where they build kirby vacuums and...yes.

In a quick Google search, I found an appliance forum.

http://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/

Goodbye Oppositelock, it’s been good. But it’s time for my real passion for Whirlpool stainless steel refrigerators to SHINE.

Sometimes I get in YouTube arguments over how my Panasonic KX-TGA101S is the best home phone.

There certainly are people that collect and restore vintage appliances, including washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and microwaves. In some cases, they overlap a lot with car enthusiasts.

Actually. My mother has a whirlpool dryer as old as i am and the only repair ever done to it was when i replaced the drive belt 4 months ago. It is a shame appliances dont last half that age now. Modern whirlpool appliances are just as crap as anything else these days. Lucky to get 8 years out of a modern major appliance it seems.

We have something others don't. Our hobby revolves around something that is able to move and go places. That is why we seem special. Others gather in forums while we gather in parking lots.

We were actually just discussing this at work the other day. We have to do cost estimates and estimated life expectancies for apartment appliances and it's amazing how older ones last.

I think it is that they were less complex and have fewer things that can potentially go wrong. That and you know... planned obsolecence.

Hammerhead has it. Vacuum cleaners have loyalists. Dyson can suck it. That junk is just marketing BS.

There are loyalists for anything. Garden tractors, washing machines, rototillers..

Oh, for sure. I mean, even on a personal level, I'm pretty sure the furnace in my house is 65+ years old. New ones might last 10-15. It certainly isn't efficient but it's a very simple piece of machinery.

I have a sweet 50's desk fan and use an early 50's Eldredge Rotary sewing machine. The brass lamp on my desk is probably older than my grandmother. And yeah, if it were financially feasible I would rock a restomodded fridge and other kitchen appliances.

So, if it exists there are probably enthusiasts for it.

BTW, the fridge in the OP is freaking amazing! I want it!

I once googled what ever happened to Phantom Vacuum cleaners (Dyson of the 90's) and came across a forum of vacuum cleaner enthusiasts. They restore and post about their finds, fixes etc. Vacs from the 50's look awesome :)

Theres enthusuants for probably anything.

(Inspired by my favorite Oppo post ?)

I think it would be great to have a bunch of resto-modded appliances: old-school on the outside, latest tech on the inside.

As long as there is a stock of repair parts available i think i would like to keep it old skool with my appliances. There are c couple of stores up in everett that do repair and resale of laregly analogue appliances. When i build my hobbit hole i shall furnish it with such finery and chrome dip the body panels if i want something shiny. Welllll. Maybe not the fridge. The prospect of my fridge venting poisonous explosive gasses does not thrill.

I very much want a vintage/antique gas stove. My current one doesn't have any electric parts on it either but it's just so much uglier.

Plastidip and custom cast parts? Give it a refresh. O.O Chrome finish spinners and fake gill louvres. And a hood vent on the oven door. Smooth like kieth stone.

As a placeholder. I mean.

I think design lost some elegance and style for a bit when engineers stopped drawing by hand. I love stream lined appliances for their looks. Though for a stove i can see having a cast pot belly with a brick surround if i could afford such things and a place to put them.

I can answer that...

My house has a kitchen that would probably be best described as ‘retro’, complete with a Kitchenaid dishwasher that was installed in 1971 (the warranty card is still sitting on the top of it!). It cleans better and faster than any modern dishwasher I’ve used, so when it developed a leak, I went on an online adventure to see if I could fix it, and ran across whole forums, not just devoted to dishwashers, but devoted to Kitchenaid dishwashers.

So yes, there do exist vintage dishwasher enthusiasts, and even collectors. Yes, they’re a bit weird, but I can’t judge too much – after all, I was the one determined enough to save mine from the scrapheap!
